Overnight stay in Chennai.

After breakfast, depart from Chennai and drive to Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) along the scenic East Coast Road, one of South India's most picturesque coastal routes. Running parallel to the Bay of Bengal, the journey offers beautiful views of sandy beaches, fishing villages, coconut groves, and the vibrant coastal life of Tamil Nadu. Along the way, there are opportunities to stop and photograph fishermen preparing their boats, colourful village scenes, and the ever-changing seascapes of the Coromandel Coast.

Upon arrival in Mahabalipuram, spend the day exploring this UNESCO World Heritage Site with a special focus on photography. Once a thriving port city of the Pallava dynasty, Mahabalipuram is renowned for its extraordinary stone monuments, ancient temples, artisan communities, and coastal atmosphere.

Begin at the iconic Shore Temple, dramatically positioned on the edge of the Bay of Bengal. The interplay of ancient stone architecture, crashing waves, and changing light creates outstanding photographic opportunities. Capture the temple from various angles while incorporating local visitors, fishermen, and the surrounding coastal landscape into your compositions.

Continue to the remarkable Five Rathas, a group of monolithic temples carved from single granite outcrops. The intricate details, textures, and scale of these ancient structures make them ideal subjects for architectural photography. Nearby, photograph local families, temple visitors, and artisans who continue the region's centuries-old stone-carving traditions.

Visit the magnificent Arjuna's Penance, one of the largest open-air rock reliefs in the world. The vast sculptural panel, filled with hundreds of figures, animals, and mythological scenes, provides endless opportunities for both detailed and wide-angle photography.

One of the highlights for photographers is a visit to the town's stone sculpture workshops, where skilled craftsmen transform blocks of granite into intricate works of art. Photograph artisans at work using traditional tools and techniques that have been passed down through generations. These workshops offer exceptional opportunities for environmental portraits and documentary photography.

Later, wander through the streets of Mahabalipuram, capturing scenes of local life, fishermen returning from the sea, colourful boats, market activity, and daily interactions among residents. The town's relaxed pace and welcoming atmosphere make it particularly rewarding for candid people photography.

As the day progresses, head to the beach and fishing areas where the warm afternoon and evening light creates ideal conditions for photography. The combination of ancient monuments, coastal landscapes, fishing communities, and artisan traditions provides a rich variety of photographic subjects. Sunset at the Shore Temple is particularly spectacular, as the golden light bathes the historic stones and the Bay of Bengal glows in the background. After a rewarding day of photography, check in to your hotel and relax amidst the coastal charm of Mahabalipuram.

Overnight stay in Mahabalipuram.

Spend a full day exploring the unique blend of French colonial heritage, Tamil culture, spirituality, and coastal life that makes Pondicherry one of South India's most photogenic destinations. Begin early in the morning along the famous Promenade, where local residents gather for walks, exercise, yoga, and morning conversations against the backdrop of the Bay of Bengal. The soft sunrise light and relaxed atmosphere provide excellent opportunities for candid people photography.

Continue into the charming French Quarter (White Town), where quiet streets lined with colourful colonial villas, bougainvillea-covered walls, elegant doorways, and heritage buildings offer endless photographic possibilities. The morning light is ideal for capturing both architecture and local life as residents open shops, cafés prepare for the day, and cyclists move through the peaceful streets.

Later, explore the vibrant Tamil Quarter, where the character of Pondicherry changes dramatically. Here, traditional houses, busy neighbourhoods, local markets, temples, and street vendors create excellent opportunities for documentary and street photography. The area offers a fascinating contrast to the colonial elegance of White Town and provides a more intimate glimpse into everyday life.

Visit one of the local markets where flower sellers, vegetable vendors, fishermen, and traders go about their daily business. The colours, textures, and human interactions make this one of the most rewarding areas for people photography. Spend time observing and engaging with local residents to create authentic portraits and visual stories.

Towards late afternoon, return to the coastal areas and nearby fishing communities. Capture fishermen repairing nets, colourful boats, and scenes of daily life along the shoreline. The warm golden light of the evening creates beautiful conditions for portrait and documentary photography.

Conclude the day back at the Promenade and French Quarter, where the streets come alive with locals and visitors enjoying the cool evening air. The combination of colonial architecture, street life, cafés, and waterfront activity offers wonderful opportunities for atmospheric photography after sunset. This carefully curated day provides a rich blend of people, culture, architecture, markets, and coastal life, making Pondicherry an outstanding destination for photographers seeking both visual variety and authentic human stories.

After breakfast, depart for Chettinad, a fascinating region renowned for its grand heritage mansions, rich cultural traditions, vibrant villages, and world-famous cuisine. The drive takes you through the rural landscapes of Tamil Nadu, passing agricultural fields, traditional villages, local markets, and scenes of everyday life that offer a glimpse into the heart of South India.

As you approach Chettinad, notice the distinctive architecture that sets the region apart. Once home to the prosperous Chettiar merchant community, Chettinad is dotted with magnificent mansions built during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These architectural masterpieces reflect a unique blend of Tamil, European, and Southeast Asian influences, showcasing the wealth and global connections of the Chettiar traders.

Upon arrival, check into your carefully selected heritage hotel, many of which are restored ancestral mansions that beautifully preserve the elegance and grandeur of a bygone era. Admire the spacious courtyards, intricately carved wooden doors, handcrafted tiles, antique furnishings, and traditional architectural details that make Chettinad so distinctive.

The remainder of the day is at leisure to relax and soak in the unique atmosphere of this historic region. You may wish to stroll through the nearby village streets, observe local life, admire the impressive heritage homes, or simply unwind amidst the timeless surroundings of your hotel.

Overnight stay in Chettinad.

Spend a full day exploring the fascinating Chettinad region, one of South India's most rewarding destinations for cultural and people photography. Begin early in the morning when village life is at its most authentic and the soft light beautifully illuminates the historic streets and mansions.

Start in one of the traditional Chettinad villages such as Kanadukathan, where grand ancestral mansions stand alongside quiet streets lined with colourful homes. As the village awakens, photograph local residents sweeping courtyards, drawing intricate kolam designs outside their homes, preparing morning meals, and gathering at tea stalls. The interaction between the villagers and their remarkable architectural surroundings creates excellent storytelling opportunities.

Continue with visits to several privately owned Chettinad mansions, many of which have been preserved by local families. With prior arrangements, enjoy access to selected heritage homes, allowing you to photograph magnificent courtyards, carved teak pillars, ornate doorways, antique furnishings, and the owners who continue to maintain these historic residences. The mansions offer outstanding opportunities for architectural photography as well as environmental portraits.

Later, visit nearby villages where daily life unfolds at a relaxed pace. Wander through narrow lanes photographing local shopkeepers, craftsmen, elderly residents, farmers, and traditional occupations that have remained unchanged for generations. The region's unhurried atmosphere makes it easy to engage with local people and capture natural, candid images.

In the afternoon, visit local artisan workshops where tile makers, woodworkers, metal craftsmen, and handloom weavers continue traditional skills for which Chettinad is renowned. These workshops provide excellent opportunities to photograph artisans at work and document the region's rich cultural heritage.

As the day progresses, explore village markets and community gathering places where residents meet, trade, and socialize. The colourful scenes, expressive faces, and traditional attire make for compelling people photography. Throughout the day, the distinctive backdrop of Chettinad's heritage architecture adds depth and character to every image.

Towards sunset, return to one of the grand mansions or village streets as the warm golden light enhances the textures of the historic buildings and creates beautiful portrait opportunities. The combination of magnificent architecture, authentic village life, and welcoming local communities makes Chettinad an exceptional destination for photographers seeking to capture the cultural soul of South India.

After breakfast, check out from your heritage hotel and drive to Madurai, one of India's oldest living cities and the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu. The journey takes approximately 2 to 3 hours and offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the rural landscapes and traditional way of life that characterize this part of southern India. As you leave the charming villages of Chettinad behind, travel through a countryside dotted with agricultural fields, palm groves, small settlements, and bustling roadside markets. Along the route, you will witness scenes of daily life unfolding at a leisurely pace—farmers tending their fields, women carrying produce to local markets, village tea stalls buzzing with activity, and colourful temples standing proudly at the heart of rural communities. The drive provides an authentic glimpse into the rich cultural fabric of Tamil Nadu beyond its major cities.

The landscape gradually becomes more vibrant as you approach Madurai, a city whose history stretches back over 2,500 years. Revered as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Madurai has long been a centre of Tamil literature, religion, commerce, and culture. The city is often referred to as the "Athens of the East" due to its immense historical and cultural significance. Upon arrival in Madurai, check in to your hotel and take some time to relax. The city exudes a unique energy, with its bustling streets, colourful markets, ancient temples, and vibrant local life creating a fascinating atmosphere for visitors. Depending on your arrival time, you may choose to explore the surrounding area, enjoy a walk through the lively streets, or simply unwind before beginning your exploration of this remarkable temple city. Overnight stay in Madurai.

Madurai is one of India's most rewarding destinations for street and people photography, offering a fascinating blend of religion, commerce, tradition, and daily life. An early start is highly recommended to take advantage of the beautiful morning light and the city's vibrant activity.

Begin before sunrise at the Meenakshi Amman Temple, where devotees arrive for morning prayers and rituals. The temple surroundings come alive with pilgrims, flower vendors, priests, and worshippers, providing excellent opportunities for candid and environmental portraits. The colourful temple towers and intricate architectural details also make striking photographic subjects.

From the temple, walk through the bustling flower market, where traders unload and sort jasmine, marigolds, and roses destined for temples and ceremonies throughout the city. The vibrant colours, textures, and lively interactions create some of Madurai's most iconic photographic scenes.

Continue into the narrow streets surrounding the temple, exploring local bazaars and traditional trading areas. Photograph spice merchants, textile sellers, street food vendors, tailors, craftsmen, and the constant flow of shoppers and pilgrims that define the city's character. The old lanes offer endless opportunities for authentic street photography.

Later in the morning, visit the famous banana market, one of the largest in the region, where traders handle enormous quantities of bananas arriving from nearby farms. The market's energy, colourful displays, and hardworking vendors provide excellent documentary photography opportunities.

After a break for lunch, spend the afternoon exploring the traditional neighbourhoods and residential streets of the old city. Here you can capture everyday life, small workshops, local businesses, cycle rickshaws, tea stalls, and interactions between residents. The slower pace allows for more thoughtful portrait photography and cultural storytelling.

In the late afternoon, visit the vegetable and wholesale markets, where traders, porters, and buyers create a dynamic atmosphere filled with colour, movement, and human interaction. The warm afternoon light adds depth and character to portraits and market scenes.

As evening approaches, return to Meenakshi Temple to photograph the changing mood of the city. The temple precincts become particularly vibrant as devotees gather for evening prayers and ceremonies. The combination of illuminated temple towers, devotional rituals, flower sellers, and bustling streets creates a rich visual experience.

Conclude the day by photographing the lively night markets and food stalls around the temple area, where Madurai's unique energy continues well after sunset. This photography-focused day offers an exceptional combination of temples, markets, street life, portraits, and cultural traditions, making Madurai one of South India's finest destinations for documentary and people photography.

After breakfast, check out from your hotel and begin the scenic drive from Madurai to Munnar, one of the most beautiful journeys in South India. Covering approximately 160 kilometres, the drive takes around 4 to 5 hours and offers a fascinating transition from the bustling plains of Tamil Nadu to the cool, mist-covered hills of Kerala's Western Ghats.

As you leave the historic temple city of Madurai behind, the landscape gradually changes from fertile agricultural plains and rural villages to rolling hills and dense forests. Along the way, pass through small towns and traditional settlements where daily life unfolds amidst coconut groves, banana plantations, and spice-growing regions. The route provides a wonderful glimpse into the diverse scenery and culture of southern India.

As the road begins to climb into the Western Ghats, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic. Winding mountain roads lead through lush forests, deep valleys, and picturesque hillsides, offering spectacular views at every turn. The air grows cooler and fresher as you ascend, while mist often drifts across the mountains, adding a magical quality to the landscape.

One of the highlights of the journey is the gradual appearance of Munnar's famous tea plantations. Endless carpets of emerald-green tea bushes blanket the hillsides, creating one of the most iconic landscapes in India. The neatly manicured plantations stretch across the valleys and mountain slopes, providing breathtaking panoramas and excellent opportunities for photography.

Along the route, you may also pass spice plantations growing cardamom, pepper, cloves, and cinnamon, reflecting the region's long-standing importance in the spice trade. Numerous viewpoints offer opportunities to pause and admire the scenery, while seasonal waterfalls and mountain streams add to the beauty of the drive.

The final stretch into Munnar is particularly memorable, as winding roads reveal sweeping vistas of tea-covered hills, misty valleys, and distant mountain peaks. The journey itself is considered one of the highlights of travelling through Kerala, offering a perfect introduction to the natural beauty of the Western Ghats.

Upon arrival in Munnar, check in to your hotel and relax amidst the tranquil surroundings. Nestled among tea gardens and cool mountain landscapes, Munnar provides a refreshing escape and a striking contrast to the bustling cities and plains of Tamil Nadu. Overnight stay in Munnar.

Rise early and head into the rolling tea estates of Munnar to take advantage of the soft morning light and the start of the working day. The early hours are ideal for photographing tea pluckers as they move through the emerald-green plantations, carefully selecting the tender leaves and carrying woven baskets on their backs. The mist-covered hills, neatly patterned tea bushes, and golden morning light create a stunning backdrop for both landscape and people photography.

Spend the morning with a local tea plantation guide who can help arrange access to areas where tea workers are active. This provides opportunities to capture authentic images of plantation life, including tea plucking, weighing stations, and interactions among workers. The combination of colourful clothing, expressive faces, and dramatic landscapes makes for compelling environmental portraits.

Later, enjoy a detailed visit to a tea factory, where you can photograph workers involved in the various stages of tea production, from sorting and processing to grading and packaging. The factory environment offers a fascinating contrast to the tranquil plantation landscapes and provides excellent documentary photography opportunities.

After lunch, visit nearby villages and local markets around Munnar to photograph everyday life in the hills. Capture shopkeepers, farmers, spice traders, tea workers returning from the fields, schoolchildren, and residents going about their daily routines. The small towns and villages surrounding Munnar offer a genuine glimpse into life in Kerala's highlands and provide numerous opportunities for candid street photography and portraits.

In the late afternoon, return to the tea estates as workers finish their day. The warm golden light illuminating the tea-covered slopes creates ideal conditions for photography. This is often the best time to capture striking silhouettes, environmental portraits, and wide-angle scenes showing workers against the vast plantation landscape.

Conclude the day at one of Munnar's scenic viewpoints, where the rolling tea gardens, misty valleys, and distant mountains provide spectacular opportunities for landscape photography. Throughout the day, the focus remains on documenting the people, traditions, and daily life that have shaped Munnar's world-famous tea industry, creating a rich and authentic photographic experience.

After breakfast, check out from your hotel and begin your journey from the cool hill station of Munnar to the enchanting backwaters of Alleppey (Alappuzha). This scenic drive, taking approximately  5 hours, showcases the remarkable diversity of Kerala's landscapes as you descend from the misty mountains of the Western Ghats to the tranquil waterways of the coastal plains. Leaving Munnar behind, travel through rolling tea plantations that blanket the hills in vibrant shades of green. The winding roads offer spectacular views of valleys, forests, waterfalls, and distant mountain peaks. As the journey progresses, you will pass through spice-growing regions where cardamom, pepper, cloves, and other aromatic spices thrive in the fertile hillsides.

Gradually, the landscape begins to change as the road descends towards central Kerala. Dense forests give way to rubber plantations, coconut groves, paddy fields, and charming villages. Along the way, observe the rhythm of rural life as farmers work in the fields, local markets bustle with activity, and small towns showcase the everyday culture of Kerala.

The route passes through some of Kerala's most picturesque countryside, offering glimpses of traditional homes, churches, temples, rivers, and lush tropical vegetation. The contrast between the cool mountain scenery of Munnar and the verdant lowlands of Kerala makes this one of the most interesting drives in the state.

As you approach Alleppey, often referred to as the "Venice of the East," the scenery transforms once again. Networks of canals, lagoons, coconut-lined waterways, and vast stretches of paddy fields begin to dominate the landscape. The presence of water is everywhere, creating a peaceful and timeless atmosphere unique to Kerala's backwaters.

Upon arrival in Alleppey, check in to your private houseboat and prepare to experience one of Kerala's most iconic attractions. Surrounded by serene waterways and lush greenery, Alleppey offers a completely different perspective of the state, where life revolves around the backwaters and centuries-old traditions continue to flourish. Overnight stay in Alleppey.

Photography on the Kerala Backwaters

Wake up to the peaceful atmosphere of Kerala's backwaters and enjoy a leisurely breakfast on board your private houseboat as the morning light gradually illuminates the tranquil waters of Vembanad Lake. The early hours offer some of the finest photographic opportunities of the day, with soft golden light, calm reflections, and local life unfolding along the shoreline.

As the houseboat gently cruises through the backwaters, keep your camera ready to capture authentic scenes of daily life. Photograph villagers beginning their day, fishermen heading out in traditional wooden boats, women washing clothes along the water's edge, and children preparing for school or boarding small boats for their morning commute. The backwaters provide a fascinating glimpse into a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for generations.

The beautiful morning light creates ideal conditions for photography, illuminating coconut palms, village homes, narrow canals, and the countless interactions that take place along the waterfront. Look for candid portraits of local residents, colourful boats gliding through the waterways, and the everyday activities that define life in Kerala's backwater communities.

The still waters often produce stunning reflections, adding depth and atmosphere to landscape and people photographs alike. With every turn of the canal, new photographic opportunities emerge, making this one of the most rewarding experiences for photographers seeking authentic cultural imagery. The combination of serene natural surroundings and vibrant human activity creates a memorable and visually rich morning on the backwaters before continuing your journey.

For a photographer, Cochin (Kochi) offers a wonderful mix of people, culture, heritage, fishing communities, markets, colonial architecture, and waterfront scenes. A well-planned day can provide excellent opportunities for both documentary and portrait photography.

Begin your day before sunrise at Fort Kochi's waterfront, where the iconic Chinese Fishing Nets create dramatic silhouettes against the morning sky. Watch fishermen haul in their catch and capture the lively atmosphere of the nearby fish market as traders and locals gather for the day's business. Continue with a leisurely walk through the historic lanes of Fort Kochi, photographing colonial architecture, colourful streets, churches, local residents, and everyday life. Later, visit Mattancherry and Jewish Town, where spice warehouses, antique shops, traditional merchants, and bustling market scenes provide excellent opportunities for documentary and portrait photography. After lunch, explore the vibrant spice markets and local neighbourhoods, capturing authentic images of traders, artisans, street vendors, and daily life. In the late afternoon, visit a fishing harbour or coastal village to photograph fishermen repairing nets, colourful boats, and activities along the waterfront. Return to Fort Kochi in the evening to capture the golden light and spectacular sunset over the Arabian Sea with the Chinese Fishing Nets in the foreground. Conclude your day with a traditional Kathakali performance, where the elaborate costumes, expressive makeup, and fascinating backstage preparations offer unique cultural photography opportunities. This carefully curated day provides an excellent blend of people, culture, heritage, and maritime life, making Cochin one of South India's most rewarding destinations for photography enthusiasts. Overnight in Cochin.

After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed morning at your hotel and take some time to reflect on the memorable experiences of your journey through South India. At the appropriate time, check out from the hotel and transfer to Cochin International Airport for your onward flight. Upon arrival at the airport, your driver will assist you with your luggage before bidding you farewell. Board your flight carrying wonderful memories of South India's magnificent temples, colonial towns, tea-covered hills, tranquil backwaters, vibrant markets, rich cultural heritage, and warm hospitality.

A wonderful journey that will be remembered
Our seven-day trip with India Personal Tours through northern India – with stops in Jaipur, Agra and Delhi – was a very special experience in every respect. From the warm welcome by our great guide Kunal Singh Shekhawat at the airport to the departure day we felt superbly looked after and accompanied by our guide as well as our friendly driver Vipin. From the very beginning, a very personal, warm atmosphere was created. It didn’t feel like a classic guided tour, but rather like traveling with a good friend. This openness, cordiality and attention has marked our journey from the beginning and has given it a special lightness. In addition to the many exciting insights into history, culture and architecture, it was above all the personal exchange that made this trip so enriching. The conversations, the small details and the fine sense of what interests us made every day special. We look back on this trip with great gratitude and can recommend India Personal Tours with complete conviction. It was an all-round successful experience and we very much hope that in the future there will be another opportunity to travel together.  ...Read More

A Great First Trip to India
India Personal Tours made our first trip to India exceptional. We visited six cities over two weeks, most in Rajasthan, and our guides and drivers -- all friendly and caring -- made sure we got the most out of every site, including some unplanned stops. The hotels Manu and his team chose for us were all also first rate. The company met all our expectations, and we're already planning a trip back!  ...Read More

What a ride through Rajasthan!
Far beyond anything we could have ever imagined for our first trip to India. We joined India Personal Tours, and a small group of like-minded folks, for an amazing 14-day ride through Rajasthan. An unbelievable itinerary took us to places we would never have found under our own steam, from the wonderful chaos of Dehli to small rural villages like Narlai and so many more mind-blowing towns and cities in between, there were unforgettable experiences at every turn. Each new hotel we arrived at seemed better than the last, and we often found ourselves awestruck at where we were staying. Our expert guide, Gudu was absolutely brilliant. Always on hand to share his wealth of knowledge and tips on each location - covering everything with a broad historical, cultural, architectural, gastronomical and spiritual perspective that made each new experience all the richer. Not a bad singing voice either! Gudu also had an uncanny knack for ‘herding the kittens’ of our group, his bright green beret and big smile became a beckon for us as we wandered through crowded temples, havelis and bazaars. He created a warm family atmosphere among our group, was flexible enough to tailor days for our group and even welcomed us into his own family home when we visited the Golden City of Jaisalmer. Big shout out to our unflappable driver, Dev too. The bus rides were super comfy, but I think we managed every to sample every other mode of transport possible too, from crazy rickshaws and tuk-tuk rides, to camels, elephants and even bullock drawn carts!I could go on and on, but we would thoroughly recommend India Personal Tours whether you’ve been to India before or it’s your first time. Halfway through our travels we were already planning our next trip.  ...Read More
